Lending a Helping Hand at Bear Cottage

On Sunday, 28th July, Bear Cottage kicked off Superhero Week with another incredible event filled with music, food, activities, and, of course, Superheroes! This annual fundraising event supports Bear Cottage, a non-profit organisation that provides respite to families of children with life-limiting conditions.

How It All Began

Eight years ago, the 1800 team was called upon to help theme the Bear Cottage Christmas party. What started as a simple favour turned into a cherished tradition. We ended up decorating the kids’ wheelchairs as part of the festivities, and the “Pimp My Ride” station was born. The kids and families loved it so much that it became a key feature of our annual involvement in the Superhero Week kickoff event.

Our Superhero Station

Every year, we create a range of superhero-themed decorations, giving the kids the option to choose their favorite hero. We then zip-tie these decorations to the wheels of their wheelchairs. This cause is led by 1800 founder Ben, who has been a driving force behind our continued involvement. Ben, along with the 1800 team, volunteers each year to bring a touch of superhero magic to the children.

The 1800 team has built strong relationships with many families who return year after year to update their superhero decorations. Some even come back just for a quick refresh, still proudly displaying the decorations from the previous year. It’s an incredible day to be part of, and we are honoured to be involved year after year.

About Bear Cottage

Bear Cottage is the only children’s hospice in New South Wales, dedicated to caring for children with life-limiting conditions. Families caring for a child with such conditions often do so around the clock for many years. Bear Cottage’s vision is to create an environment as far removed from a hospital setting as possible, providing excellence in pediatric palliative care 24 hours a day.

Superhero Week

Superhero Week is Bear Cottage’s annual fundraiser event, aiming to raise $250,000 in 2024. The event is not just a fun-filled week; it’s an opportunity for the community to come together to make a real impact. From schools and preschools to organizations and individuals, everyone is invited to don their capes and be superheroes for children in need. The funds raised go directly supporting the children and families at Bear Cottage.
